Head Start is a federal and state funded comprehensive preschool program for low-income children ages three through five. It provides children with a developmentally appropriate preschool experience. The program ensures that young children get health checkups and treatment, oral health screenings, and that they are fed a nutritious hot meal every day. Head Start is unique in its comprehensive approach to the needs of children and families, which adheres to federally designated standards.
Comprehensive Services:
Centers: Our preschool program operates in area schools 2 to 4 days a week depending on location.
Transportation: School bus transportation may be available .
Education: Individualized learning experiences that promote school readiness and nurture every child’s social, emotional, intellectual, and physical growth.
Support for Children with Disabilities: Early identification and intervention to support children with disabilities and their
inclusion in all program experiences.
Family Engagement: Specialized family partnerships, goal setting, referrals, parenting education and ongoing support. Opportunities to volunteer, to learn and practice new skills, and to socialize.
Nutrition: Healthy meals that meet USDA standards and nutrition education for children and parents.
Parent Decision-Making: Opportunities for parents to participate in Policy Council to learn parent advocacy and make decisions that drive our program.
Curriculum: Our classrooms use Creative Curriculum, a research-based and research-proven solution for effective teaching strategies in early childhood. Using exploration and discovery children learn to develop confidence, creativity, and lifelong critical thinking skills.
Health: Promotion of medical and dental examinations, immunizations, comprehensive health screenings, and necessary follow-up services for each child. Promotion of mental health and wellness.

- Karlstad Center - classroom for 3 and 4 year olds running full day, Monday - Thursday.
Lake of the Woods County
- Baudette Centers - classroom for 3 year olds and one for 4 year olds, running full day, Monday - Thursday.
Marshall County
- Grygla Center - classroom for 3 and 4 year olds running full day, Monday - Thursday.
- MCC - classroom in Viking for 3 and 4 year olds running full day, Monday - Wednesday.
Roseau County
- Badger Center - classroom for 3 and 4 year olds running full day, Monday - Thursday.
- GMR Center - classroom in Greenbush for 3 and 4 year olds running full day, Monday - Thursday.
- Roseau Centers - classroom running full day Mondays & Tuesdays, or Wednesday &Thursday. Plus a monthly child development home visit.
- Warroad Centers - one classrooms for 3 year olds and one for 4 year olds, both running full day, Monday - Thursday.
